Before you can use BioMedia to change configuration settings, you will need to understand the basic method of interaction. This is a very brief description so you will understand the underlying philosophy of operation and does not attempt to describe every feature. Please see the BioMedia Reference for details on specific settings.

If you are working through the step-by-step installation procedure, this will be enough to help you check your progress as you connect the device. Later, you can learn more about the detailed settings that are available.

Step 1: Launch BioMedia

You will likely need to run BioMedia once when you first setup your device, and then rely on internal nonvolatile memory in the device to maintain the settings you've established. As a result, BioMedia does not automatically run whenever you plug in the device.

But, please note that the Windows operating system communicates with every USB device at a low level to allow it to maintain a list of attached devices, and allocate power, etc.

Run the BioMedia. You can do this in really three ways.

  1. From your Desktop. Just click the COG icon.
  2. From the Start Menu. Click Start - All Programs - BioMedia Application
  3. From the location where you installed it, typically:
    c:\Program Files\Cognisys\BioMedia
The following dialog box will display:
BioMedia before Connection

Step 2: Select Device

Device Select Tabs The BioMedia application is designed to support several Cognisys products used for Biofeedback applications. First, select the device you wish to communicate with by clicking on the appropriate tab. The Device Status pane is the same for all devices but the other settings are a bit different.

Step 3: Update Status

This simple utility does not attempt to communicate with the device unless you specifically request it.

To synchronize the application with the device, click Update Status
It may take a moment to communicate with the device, and then the display should look something like this:

BioMedia after Update Status

Some of the details will differ from the sample shown above depending on your exact situation.

If it does not go into the "Connected" state, make sure you've selected the right device, as mentioned in Step 2, above.

After you select the device you are working with, clicking Update Status will always be your first action with BioMedia, and at any time you want to make sure that the display is synchronized with the device.

After connecting with the device, any changes you make in the dialog of the application are immediately updated in the device. For example, checking a checkbox in the display will change the setting in the device immediately.

Most changes of this type are temporary; they are in effect only during the current power-on cycle. Use Save Settings Button to make them permanent.

Step 4: Test Communication

A good first test that the device is connected and working, is to click the Invert Reward Polarity Checkbox checkbox. The "Detect Status" light on the front panel should change state with each click.

Step 5: Make Configuration Changes

Now, you can make whatever configuration changes are appropriate. The various statuses and settings are described in the BioMedia Reference. If you are setting up a new device, it is not necessary to review all these settings at this time.

Step 6: Save Settings

Any settings that you change are temporary, and not saved to nonvolatile memory. If you wish to save the current settings to nonvolatile memory, then it is required that you click Save Settings Button. Next time the device is turned on, any settings from nonvolatile memory are used.

Exceptions:

You may also wish to save the configuration settings or IR Sequences (Play and Pause) to a disk file. This can be done with the File - Save menu.

Step 7: Continue to set up your device

You now understand how to use BioMedia. If you were setting up a new device, continue with setup specific to that device: Otherwise, continue with the BioMedia Manual by clicking "Next Topic" below.
