Right click over the linegraph instrument to get its function
menu. Select Feedback options. A small pop-up appears:
You can define feedback for two conditions: When the signal
is either above or below the threshold. BioGraph lets you define
feedback for both. We want a continuous sound when we are "in the zone" and silence when
we are not.
Click on the little arrow next to ABOVE Threshold or BELOW
Threshold:
This opens a dialog box which lets you scroll through all the
available feedback options. As some of these can get quite sophisticated,
we will describe them succinctly and let you explore the more
involved functions by yourself.
No feedback: The simplest one, no explanation necessary.
It also is the default option.
Inhibit feedback: BioGraph lets you define above and
below feedback for up-to 11 different signals, independently of
one another. Besides the fact that this can get quite confusing
to a patient, there may be more clinical benefits to rewarding
only one specific condition. As this condition can involve more
than one physiological factor (i.e. skin conductance below threshold
but beta waves above), you might wish to use one instrument to
turn off the feedback from all the other instruments on the screen.
Do this by selecting the Inhibit feedback option.
Switch control: This feedback option requires that
a device is plugged in the Switch connector on the back of the
PRO-SB Interface. Switch control can turn the device ON or OFF
when the signal is on the defined side of the threshold. The big limitation is that
only one signal can control the switch.
Digitized sound (*.wav): This option allows you to
use Wave files as feedback. The following dialog box appears:
Digitized sound can be easily used to control the FMP, as follows:
In the dialog box, select only one wave file from the list on the right (double-click
to select, selections get copied to the list on the left). The patient will not hear these sounds,
they are only heard by the FMP device. Therefore, we want a loud constant sound, like
an alarm. Just choose one.
Select the "Loop" sound option to
just keep playing the sound over without breaking.
The Cycle through the list and Randomize list options are
nonfunctional as you have chosen only a single sound.
Move the slider at the bottom of the dialog box to the left to minimize the
interval between successive feedbacks.
Clear list will remove all your selections from the
list on the left. OK will accept your settings and Cancel
will exit the pop-up without making changes. If you are not sure
of what a Wave file sounds like, highlight it and click Play and then
Stop playing to stop it.
MIDI: Play song (*.MID): BioGraph can also play MIDI
files. These are synthesized music files. This is the best way to interface with
the FMP device.
First, copy the file C:\Program Files\Cognisys\BioMedia\sbatone_pausable_8min.mid
to the directory C:\BIOGRAPH\MIDI. It should appear in the list on the right.
In the dialog box, select only one midi file from the list on the right (double-click
to select, selections get copied to the list on the left). The patient will not hear these sounds,
they are only heard by the FMP device. Therefore, we want a loud constant sound, like
an alarm. sbatone_pausable_8min.mid is such a sound, and it instantly pauses.
The Cycle through the list and Randomize list options are
nonfunctional as you have chosen only a single sound.
Select Mute outside criteria to make sure the sound is not on when the patient is not
"in the zone".
