Check Contents:

Carefully unpack your equipment. Check that you have the following:
  1. the FMP Device
  2. USB Cable
  3. Audio/Control Input Cable - Stereo audio dubbing cable
  4. 2.5mm to 3.5mm cable (Used only if you are old Thought Technologies Hardware user.)

Obtain DVD Player

We recommend Toshiba players, and specifically, the SD3960 is a compatible model. These are compatible with this product with no setup. See Player Compatibility Guide for cautions, information, and other suggested products.

Connect FMP USB Cable

The FMP using the USB cable for power and configuration commands. Connect this to your PC. The "Power" light should be lighted. If you use a Toshiba DVD player, it will work right out of the box, and the USB cable is only necessary for power. Once the unit is set up, there is no need to run anything on your computer to use it, as the configuration is stored in nonvolatile memory.

Test DVD Player

  • Insert a DVD movie into the Player.
  • Press Play on the remote control or front panel. You may have to press "Enter" to get the DVD to start playing. You must be past the FBI warnings and any ads.
  • Place the FMP device in front of the player so the IR-OUT LED is roughly pointed toward the front of the DVD Player.
  • With the FMP powered up, press the "Test" button. The DVD player should be controlled according to the Audio Detect light.
  • If it does not work, you may need to configure the control codes using our Windows application.

Connect Control Cable

The control cable provides IN-ZONE/OUT-OF-ZONE information to the FMP device. There are two ways to get this from your biofeedback or neurofeedback system, described below.

Equipment with Logic Output

This interface will work with ANY equipment that uses a relay closure and opening to control auxiliary equipment. On your Biofeedback System, there may be a connector ("Switch") that is controlled by a relay. For example, on the Thought Technologies Ltd. equipment, this connector is located on the ProSB module, or on the TT-USB module.

  • Connect the Control Cable (Audio dubbing cable) to Control-In on the FMP and to the "Switch" output on the Biofeedback System.
    • Thought Technologies with ProUSB box: use 3.5mm cable.
    • Thought Technologies with Serial Interface: use 2.5mm to 3.5mm cable.
  • Turn the "Threshold" knob on the front panel of the FMP fully clockwise.

Equipment with Sound Output

For all other equipment, we will detect sound or silence from your Biofeedback System.

  • Plug a speaker or headphone into the speaker or headphone output of the Biofeedback System PC.
  • Test that you can get SOUND during intervals when you want the DVD to play, and silence when you want it to PAUSE.
    • Your Biofeedback System may be able to produce a solid tone or silence without any additional files. If so, make sure you adjust it to modulate the Amplitude (volume) and not the Frequency (Note or Tone). We don't care what note you play, just how loud it is.
    • Or, use the MIDI file: http://www.cognisys.com/sbatone_pausable_8min.mid to produce these sounds. Try playing this MIDI file using Microsoft Media Player, or Real Player to test your sound output.
    • Turn up the volume all the way on your PC volume control. It should be an obnoxious sound! Try clicking PLAY - STOP - PLAY - STOP and insure it is stopping correctly.
  • Now that you have a nice loud sound being emitted, plug the Control Cable provided with your product between the same Speaker or Headphone output to the FMP device, at the "Audio In" connector.
  • Click PLAY - STOP - PLAY - STOP on Media Player or Real Player and verify that the "Audio Detect" light matches the state of the sound.
  • Adjust the "Threshold" knob until this works.

Full System Test

You will need to arrange to have a subject available or a way to go between IN-ZONE and OUT-OF-ZONE. The DVD player should PLAY/PAUSE accordingly.

Usage Tips

Indicator Lights:

The Audio Detect light will be "on" when ever the audio is detected or control signal is "Closed". If you see that the lights on the FMP are working but it is not controlling the player, check the alignment of the FMP to the player, and try using the manual buttons on the UBI.
